Lucius Aemilius Cattianus, chief clerk (cornicularius), and Titus Flavius Surus, registrar (actarius), and also the clerks (librarii) and record clerks (exacti) of Legion III Augusta, Loyal and Avenging, whose names are recorded below, established the record office of the legion with statues of the divine house, from the very generous pay and benefactions which they confer on them. It has been formally decided that, if anyone takes over the position of a chief clerk of the legion or of a registrar who has been honourably discharged, he should give to the man whom he has replaced a sum of 1,000 denarii as an entrance fee; similarly, if anyone takes over the position of any clerk, he should give a sum of 1,000 denarii to the members of the collegium as an entrance fee; and if anyone from the same collegium gains an honourable discharge, he should receive from his colleagues a payment of 800 denarii; similarly, if someone takes his leave of his colleagues, he should receive 500 denarii.
(On the left pillar) Record clerks: 20 names
(On the right pillar) Clerks: 22 names.
It is interesting that Cattianus and Surus (who also appear in a dedication made by the optiones—text no. 233) receive a payment from those taking their place rather than from their collegium. However, this payment made by their successors was presumably in lieu of a membership fee for the association of cornicularii and actarii, if the successor was not a member. The reference to the generosity of pay and benefactions indicates the substantial rises in army pay granted under the Severan dynasty.
